Joe Hird made two of St. Thomas' three straight interceptions late in the first half as the Tommies scored touchdowns off of each to break away from Presbyterian 54-15 in a season-ender on Saturday. St. Thomas (7-3) ended its inaugural Division I season with a 6-2 record in the Pioneer Football League after making the jump from D-III. Presbyterian finished 2-9, 0-8. The teams battled through four lead changes with Hird's first interception setting up a Nick Rice 40-yard touchdown run to put the Tommies ahead for good, 21-15. Presbyterian's next two possessions ended in points for St. Thomas as Luke Glenna returned an interception 27 yards and Hird's second pick set up Hope Adebayo's 1-yard TD run for a 35-15 halftime lead. Ren Hefley completed 16 of 28 passes for the Blue Hose with one touchdown against the three picks. Four passers compiled 323 yards through the air for Presbyterian. The Tommies rushed for 227 yards and seven touchdowns with Rice leading at 101 yards gained. - AP College Football

Hope Adebayo ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns and St. Thomas (Minnesota) edged Drake 21-14 on Saturday. Nick Rice had 94 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Tommies. He carried the ball eight times for 31 yards as St. Thomas ran out the final 5 1/2 minutes after the Bulldogs closed within a touchdown. Hope scored on 2- and 8-yard runs in the second quarter to give the Tommies (6-3, 5-2 Pioneer Football League) a 14-0 lead at the half. Brandon Langdok put Drake on the board with a 3-yard run in the third quarter and after an interception, the Bulldogs drove it close. However, Isaiah Hall blocked a field goal attempt and with an unsportsmanlike penalty tacked on, St. Thomas got the ball back at the Drake 43. Rice covered those yards on three caries, the last going for 28. Ian Corwin threw a 6-yard touchdown passes to Caden Meis with 5:26 to play for Drake (2-7, 1-5). - AP College Football

Hope Adebayo ran for 191 yards and two touchdowns and St. Thomas continued to prosper in its inaugural Division I season, defeating Marist 27-7 on Saturday. In addition to Adebayo's two TDs, Cade Sexauer threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Max Zimmerman and ran for another score. St. Thomas, dismissed from its Division III conference, was granted a waiver to jump straight to Division I. The Tommies are 4-1 in the Pioneer Football League and 5-2 overall. Marist's Austin Day completed 9 of 16 passes for 101 yards and the Red Foxes (3-4, 3-2) were held to 62 yards rushing on 30 carries. Day had a 2-yard run for Marist's only score. The Tommies held Marist to 167 yards while gaining 392. - AP College Football

Cade Sexauer threw for 194 yards and two touchdowns and Tom Loeffler ran for two touchdowns and St. Thomas (MN) beat Butler 36-0 in its Pioneer Football League debut on Saturday. St. Thomas (2-1, 1-0) went 35-1 in its last 36 games played on campus to close out its Division III membership, losing only in that span to eventual NCAA runner-up UW Oshkosh 34-31 in the 2016 NCAA playoffs. The Tommies currently have a 28-game home-field regular-season win streak. Loeffler scored on a 2-yard touchdown run to put the Tommies up 7-0 in the first quarter. Early in the second, Sexauer led a 10-play, 92-yard drive that lasted almost six minutes and ended when he threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Josh Komis. Loeffler closed out the half with a 5-yard touchdown run for 22-0 advantage. Bret Bushka threw for 177 yards and an interception for Butler (2-2, 0-1). - AP College Football

Louis Hyde kicked a 39-yard field goal with 59 seconds to play and St. Thomas rallied for a historic 12-9 win over Michigan Tech in its FCS debut on Saturday. Tight end Aiden Carlson pulled the Tommies into a 9-9 tie when he recovered quarterback Tommy Dolan's fumble on 1st and goal in the end zone with 5:43 to play but the extra point was blocked. St. Thomas forced a three-and-out before putting together the winning drive, getting 24 yards.

The Division II Huskies quickly picked up 40 yards before Johnson Fallah picked of Will Ark's pass with 14 seconds to play to seal the win. St. Thomas, which had received NCAA approval to jump from Division III to D-I in the summer of 2020, was the only FCS or FBS team not to play a game last fall or spring. Then the 2021 season opener was one of three games canceled because of COVID-19, meaning the Tommies went 95 weeks between games. It is the first time in 28 years a school has jumped two divisions, the last being Buffalo and Dayton in 1993. Those schools only moved up in football that year but St. Thomas joined the Pioneer League for football and the Summit League for 18 other sports. - AP College Football

When Pioneer Football League Commissioner Patty Viverito first heard about St. Thomas, which was essentially kicked out of its conference for being too good, she thought, "Oh, come on. This is crazy." Fast forward several months, after the St. Paul university decided to make the big jump from Division III to Division I. Viverito discovered that some within her league had the same trepidations about adding St. Thomas as the MIAC did when giving it the boot. "I thought people would be 100 percent enthusiastic," Viverito said. "And I got my first phone call from a skeptical person in our league who said, 'Now, wait a minute, I have a hard enough time competing in the current Pioneer Football League lineup. How am I going to compete against St. Thomas? They're too good.'?"

Viverito's response was pretty simple. "Whenever you can find a member who will make your league better, you act," she said. St. Thomas, with its 126-21 record under longtime coach Glenn Caruso - including two NCAA championship appearances the past eight seasons - just seemed to fit. St. Thomas, which received clearance from the NCAA last week to start the five-year process, will begin playing at the D-I level in 2021-22. When the football team joins the Pioneer Football League, it will be one of 11 teams in the non-scholarship, football-only conference, spread from California to New York and Minnesota to Florida. The conference champion automatically qualifies for the FCS playoffs. - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Though St. Thomas did not get final approval Wednesday for its proposed move to Division I, the NCAA pushed it one step closer to that goal. The NCAA's Strategic Vision and Planning Committee has recommended a proposal to the Division I Council that would allow qualified schools to reclassify directly from Division III to Division I. The Council put the plan into the NCAA's legislative pipeline Wednesday, with a vote scheduled for April 2021. In the meantime, the Council said it would "be receptive to a formal waiver request" from St. Thomas to begin the process sooner.

St. Thomas has been waiting for months to get NCAA approval to move directly from D-III to D-I, which is not allowed under current rules. A statement from the school called Wednesday's action "encouraging news," adding that athletic director Phil Esten immediately will begin working on the waiver application. The Tommies were voted out of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference last May and will leave the league in July 2021. The Summit League, which has invited the Tommies to join, will help the school submit the waiver request. - Minneapolis Star Tribune
